The deteriorated physical condition and worn out appearance of Franklin's historic district street corridors and public square areas presented a negative image of the community and hampered its economic development potential. A partnership of community leaders and downtown business/property owners engaged E. G. & G., Inc. as prime consultant to organize and direct the Franklin Downtown Streetscape Project for the purpose of reestablishing a positive downtown district image and prime real estate environment.
E. G. & G., Inc. prepared design and financing plans, directed implementation strategies and provided construction documents/administration services for streetscape and public square capital improvements. The nine-block project included installation of new sidewalks with decorative brick paving, historical-style street lights, underground utility cables, storm drainage, parking, landscaping and furnishings. The streetscape/public square improvements were designed to compliment the downtown district's traditional architectural character and to comply with requirements of the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Register of Historic Places.
The accomplishments of the Franklin Downtown Streetscape Project were recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in its Great American Main Street Award, a national award of excellence in the revitalization of downtown commercial districts.
