The Hamilton Area Chamber of Commerce asked E. G. & G., Inc. to help position the downtown district for economic development. It was recognized that comprehensive improvements were needed to maintain and expand the physical and financial bases of the county seat. Through a series of meetings with businesses and stakeholders, city and county officials, property owners and tenants, and interested citizens, plans were made for a two-prong approach: 1) infrastructure improvements to be financed through property assessments, grants, and city and county funds, and 2) the creation of a Special Improvement District for marketing and promotion of the downtown area, and maintenance of the new streetscape improvements.
The final streetscape design included widening sidewalks along Main Street and creating a boulevard effect with street trees and a center raised planting area. Decorative crossings were installed to calm traffic and enable pedestrians to safely cross Main Street's five traffic lanes. Pedestrian alleys linking the parking located behind buildings with Main Street were re-designed to create clean, bright, safe passages with arches, lighting and landscaping highlighting the entrances. In 2002, the project received a Merit Award from the Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. |
